The 24-Hour AI Decision for Plumbers and Heating Engineers

Ask how long the job took and you get an accurate answer. Ask how long the job took — the quote, the four texts chasing a decision, the parts that came wrong, the chase for payment — and the answer gets vague. Not because you are careless, but because none of it is billable, so none of it is recorded. That is the part where AI either helps or it does not.

Two hours of work, spread across a day

You write down where your week actually goes — not from memory, from your own records. You read nine straight judgements about this trade specifically. You score your own list against four questions, run the top three past a safety check, and write one page you keep.

Then you sleep on it and confirm it in the morning. That overnight gap is why it is 24 hours and not an afternoon — and a surprising number of answers do not survive being read back cold.

What you end up with

  • The one job you are going to try it on, named
  • Why that one won — scored against four questions, in writing
  • A second choice, if the first turns out not to work
  • A list of what it never touches in your business, decided once so you are not deciding it again at half six on a Friday
  • One thing you can do this week that costs nothing
  • A ceiling — what it is allowed to cost you before you stop

Four places where you stop and check your own work

Four times in the book you stop, look at what you have just written, and sign it off — or decide not to. You are allowed to fail your own check, and three of them send you backwards. A scoring system nobody can fail is one that agrees with whoever is holding the pen.

  • Did you measure your week, or remember it?
  • Did you score it honestly, or arrange it?
  • Is anything unsafe getting through because it scored well?
  • Does it still read right in the morning?

The safety check is a stop, not a score. One no and that job is out — and if all three go out, finishing there is a real answer.

Written for this trade, not for “small business”

The capture sheet is pre-populated with the work you actually do. The nine judgements are about surveys and quotes, the messages you send over and over, supplier enquiries, and the covering paperwork that sits around a certificate. The stop list names the things that must stay with you — gas safety judgement, landlord gas safety records and building control notifications — because they carry your name, and no tool can hold it.

This is probably not for you if you want:

  • A list of AI tools to buy. We name none, and that is deliberate
  • Someone to tell you AI can handle your gas safety judgement or a landlord gas safety record. It cannot, and we say so at length
  • A promise of time or money saved. We make none

Included

The low-carbon heating question — and what the qualification is actually worth

You are being told, constantly, that heat pumps are about to change your trade and that you should spend money now on getting qualified for them. Some of that is true. The part that is usually left out is what it is currently worth.

The bonus section goes through what is actually settled, with every document named and dated. The Future Homes Standard was set out in Written Ministerial Statement HCWS1445, published 24 March 2026 and in force 24 March 2027. Three things the headlines generally leave out: it applies to new build, the Statement does not mention gas boilers, and it does not name which Approved Documents are being amended — so anyone telling you precisely what you will have to do differently is guessing.

Then it goes through what the work pays under the national agreement, and reaches a finding about the qualification that almost nobody selling it will mention. That finding is the reason the section exists. It is in the workbook rather than on this page.

And it argues against itself, at full strength — including the fact that the demand story here is weaker than the one told about electricians, and weaker in a specific way. It makes no prediction about your outcome.

Questions

Before you buy

Is this a course?

No. No videos, no modules, nothing to log into. It is a workbook you fill in. Roughly half of it is blank instruments.

Do I need to be technical?

No. You need no AI team, no new platform, and no purchase. Most people doing this already have everything they need.

Does it tell me which tool to use?

No, and deliberately. Named tools go out of date, and almost everyone offering you a recommendation has a stake in it — including consultancies, including this one. We give you questions that work on any tool.

Is this about replacing tradespeople with AI?

The opposite. Four of the nine tasks it examines are ones it argues should not be attempted at all, and the skilled part of the job is not among the candidates. Nobody is coming for the pipework.

Will it promise me savings?

No. It helps you reach a decision. What happens after that depends on your business.

What if the answer is “not yet”?

That is a real outcome and the workbook has a route for it. The safety check can end it. A dated, reasoned decision that your work needs you is worth more than a forced yes.

Is this the right edition for me?

This is the UK Edition. The decision method is identical across editions; the regulations, the pay evidence and the bonus section are not — they are different documents reaching different conclusions. Buy the one you work in. If you buy the wrong one, tell us and we will send the correct edition at no charge — that is a swap, not a refund, and it does not use up your 14 days.

Can I print it and reuse it?

Yes. One purchase covers reuse inside your own business, as many copies as your work needs.

This workbook is an operational starting point. It is not legal, regulatory, compliance, safety, registration or professional advice, and it changes none of your obligations under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998, the Building Regulations, and the terms of your registration. It promises no savings, revenue, time recovered, or return on investment, and makes no prediction about any employment outcome. The worked example is invented for teaching and labelled as such. No third-party vendor is named or endorsed.
